Why Choose Applied Mathematics?

Although many positions with the title "mathematician" or "statistician" require a graduate degree, there is a growing demand for people whose undergraduate training emphasizes modern applied mathematics. These positions are typically interdisciplinary and focus on a combination of modeling, analysis, statistics, and computation. They are found in such diverse fields as financial services, pharmaceutical research, and municipal administration. Applied mathematicians are found everywhere in commerce, industry, and government where quantitative data is used to make decisions. Our graduates have found positions in insurance companies, research laboratories, and Internet startups, among other places.

Why Choose Biology?

The biology program at IIT provides a rigorous educational experience in the fundamental areas of biology including genetics, microbiology, cell biology and biochemistry, and structural biophysics. It gives you a firm foundation in the field, both in biological theory and experimentation, so that you may pursue many career paths after leaving IIT. Our students also benefit from small class sizes, classes taught by faculty (not teaching assistants) who are accessible to students, and individual advising by members of the faculty. The curriculum is interdisciplinary and flexible, allowing degree options in biology, biochemistry, and molecular biochemistry and biophysics. IIT offers special degree programs in secondary education, dual B.S./M.S., dual B.S./M.D. or D.O., and dual B.S./optometry.

Why Choose Chemistry?

The chemistry program at IIT provides rigorous education in the fundamental areas of chemical theory and chemical experimentation. It roots you in the discipline and provides you with a firm foundation so that you can take many paths from here. The flexible curriculum offers you the opportunity to specialize beyond the traditional areas with one of six options: biologicalpharmaceuticalpolymer, or materials chemistry; chemical physics; or chemistry education (combined bachelor's/teaching certificate). Also possible are dual-degree, major plus minor, combined bachelor's/master's, premedical, or honors law options.

Why Choose Computer Science?

Beyond the fundamentals, IIT offers focused study in many areas of computer science, with courses in areas that include data mining, information security, artificial intelligence, and distributed computing. For bachelor's students, we also offer formal specializations in information security and in information and knowledge management systems. (In fact, the National Security Agency has designated IIT as a Center of Excellence in information assurance.) We also offer a master of science, a professional master's with 11 specializations, and a Ph.D. If you have a bachelor's degree and just want to extend your knowledge, we also offer non-degree graduate study and graduate certificates, both of which can be applied to a master's degree later on, if you wish.
