IIT Karl Menger Lecture and Awards 2010

The Department of Applied Mathematics at IIT hosted Donald Saari, of the Institute for Mathematical Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, Irvine, as the 2010 Karl Menger Lecturer.  The Lecture, part of the fourth annual Karl Menger Lecture and Awards, was given April 19-20, 2010 on the Illinois Institute of Technology main campus.  Saari's lecture was Arrow's Theorem: What Does It Really Mean and How Does It Affect All Academic Disciplines?.   Watch this page for announcements concerning the 2011 Karl Menger Lecture and Awards

Donald Saari"Arrow's Theorem: What Does It Really Mean and How Does It Affect All Academic Disciplines?"Delivered by Professor Donald Saari of the University of California.

"Arrow's Theorem" is a beautiful mathematical result; it is among the mathematical theorems that have had the greatest impact over the last half century. Yet, most mathematicians have, at best, only a passing acquaintance with it. After introducing the theorem in this expository lecture, I will then explain why the result does not mean what almost everyone has accepted for 50 years. After a reinterpretation and extension, it will then be shown how this result has serious implications for all disciplines== in particular, engineering, astronomy, decision analysis, and so forth.

Donald Saari is a Distinguished Professor in the Departments of Economics and Mathematics at the University of California, Irvine, where he also serves as the Director of the Institute for Mathematical Behavioral Sciences. His research crosses several mathematical disciplines, and he is a Fellow of both SIAM and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Prof. Saari is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

More About Karl Menger

Karl Menger was a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics at IIT from 1946-1971, and influenced many students, fellow faculty members, and friends during his lifetime.  Regarded as one of the finest mathematicians of the 20th century, he made significant contributions to the fields of dimension theory, probability, economics, ethics, geometry, and calculus.
