Interactive and Transparent Machine Learning

Mustafa Bilgic
Associate Professor of Computer Science

Machine learning, a kind of artificial intelligence, uses algorithms that can learn from data so computers can gain “knowledge” without having to be programmed. Machine learning algorithms are now everywhere. However, they are severely lacking in interactivity and transparency, leading to serious usability issues and trust concerns. Equipping the algorithms with richer interaction capabilities and enabling them to explain their reasoning patterns has significant potential in making them more useful and user-friendly. Bilgic’s Machine Learning Laboratory is addressing these problems with an innovative approach that they refer to as “interactive and transparent machine learning.”
