Milk Activity

This is a very visible activity that shows the behavior of milk when it reacts with liquid soap. Through this activity, you can pinpoint the importance of a research question coupled with the understandings about inquiry: Scientific inquiry begins with a research question and investigation methods are guided by a research question.

Students are given a bowl of milk. They are asked to place one drop of four different colors of food coloring in the four corners around the bowl. Then, they are asked to dip a toothpick in liquid soap and to put it down in the center of the bowl. Before they observe what happens, they are asked to make a prediction.

After students made predictions and observations, students are asked “Is what you have done a scientific investigation?” SI (scientific inquiry) discussions deal with the understandings about inquiry : Scientific inquiry begins with a research question and investigation methods are guided by a research question.
