The Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence (BS-AI), one of the first degrees of its kind in the country, gives students the broad and deep foundations necessary to build computational systems that can interpret sensory input, learn from experience, understand human language, plan ahead, and support intelligent decision making. This unique program combines in-depth technical education with interdisciplinary experiences to emphasize ethics and social impact.
The program begins with introductory courses in programming, computer science, mathematics, and statistics that provide students with a firm technical foundation. Students are then prepared to learn core AI concepts and techniques including state-space search, game-playing, machine learning, neural networks, planning, computer vision, and language understanding. The program includes a variety of advanced AI electives to enable students to develop technical mastery in specific subfields.
From its foundation, the field of artificial intelligence has been an interdisciplinary endeavor, requiring deep knowledge of both computational and human sciences. Moreover, the growing impact of AI on society demands that graduates are capable and ethical collaborators, able to ensure the safe and effective adoption of new technologies across domains. This unique curriculum addresses these demands in the following ways:
- Students will take an AI Breadth course covering the cognitive, psychological, and philosophical foundations of AI.
- The curriculum deeply integrates ethical thinking into technical courses to give students critical training in issues of algorithmic fairness, transparency, and bias.
- The BSAI program requires a minor in an area of the student’s choosing (15 credits), which will provide the opportunity for the student to focus on an application area of AI. For example, a minor in Biology would prepare students well for industrial or academic opportunities at the intersection of these fields.
- Students will complete 6 credits of Illinois Tech’s innovative IPRO program, providing an opportunity to apply AI concepts to real-world problems.
Graduates of the program will be well prepared to work as software developers, artificial intelligence engineers, and data scientists across many sectors, including medicine, finance, robotics, and business intelligence. Additionally, students will have a strong technical foundation to pursue graduate work in computer science and AI. Students will also be well-positioned to pursue co-terminal degrees with a number of Illinois Tech’s Master’s programs, particularly those in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Computer Science.
